Elder Queers Give Advice
Supported through the Foundation North Fund 2024
Rule Foundation is proud to have supported the Elder Queers Give Advice project to take place across Tāmaki Makaurau as part of Auckland Pride 2025, including an activation at the Big Gay Out.
Elder Queers Give Advice is more than a project—it’s a movement built on the power of intergenerational connection. This initiative bridges the gap between kaumātua (elders) and rangatahi (youth), allowing both to share wisdom, stories, and experiences that span decades.
Co-Producer Nellie Lyon says of the project, “Elder Queers Give Advice is about having a kōrero that really connects you to someone else's experience and story, and makes you feel seen and heard in return. At first, it takes courage to sit down and talk to someone unfamiliar, but once the conversation starts, the magic happens. For the young people, these kōrero (discussions) provide not just advice but a deeper understanding of resilience, survival, and the power of queer history.’
Elder Queers Give Advice is a living testament to the strength of intergenerational bonds, and with continued support from the Rule Foundation's Foundation North Fund, it promises to keep building a stronger, more resilient community, one kōrero at a time.
"He kitenga kanohi, he hokinga mahara. He kawenga mahara, he hāpori kitea."
"The advice wasn’t just about life—it was about living fully, even when the world doesn’t always make space for us," - Tane (rangatahi participant)
